Pussy Riot

I first began working with Nadya on Putin's Ashes, for which I served as director of photography and camera operator. The piece premiered as an installation video at Jeffery Deitch Gallery in Los Angeles and is now in the collections of several prominent museums.

I've gone on to work with Nadya on art films, actions and documentary. I also work with her on the music and audio side, playing synthesizers in her noise offshoot Siberia, and often accompanying her live Pussy Riot performances on drums.

For her recent show Police State at MoCA Geffen, I designed and built a custom heartrate monitor signal amplifier that boosted her actual heart beat as picked up by EKG leads up to audio levels. She was then able to blend this signal into the durational audio soundscapes she produced live in the gallery.

Putin's Ashes

A short art film created in response to Putin's war in Ukraine. Pussy Riot burned a ten by ten foot portrait of the Russian president, performed rituals, and cast spells aimed to chase him away. The ashes were collected and bottled in faux-furry frames sewn using the same skills Nadya was forced to learn in a Russian penal colony. The film premiered as an installation video at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in Los Angeles and is now in the collections of several prominent museums.

God Save Abortion

An old-school protest art action at Indiana's Supreme Court, the first state to outlaw most abortions after Roe v. Wade was overturned. Nadya led the demonstration with students from Indiana University, a ten-foot inflatable vulva, hot pink smoke, and the new Pussy Riot single. The piece pays homage to Martin Luther's theses, opening with Thesis №1: God Save Abortion. Honored at the 2024 Webby Awards for Best Individual Performance in Video.
